Cloud Computing Could Become a Powerful Ally of the Green Movement

Cloud Computing Could Become a Powerful Ally of the Green Movement

By Maricar Ocampo Baluyut

Over the last several years, the push for energy conservation has extended to nearly every area of society and business that you can think of. This drive to produce more energy efficient devices, systems and processes is often a featured aspect of what many have referred to as, "the green movement". It has been argued by a great number of individuals that pollution, hyperinflation, and dwindling resources are among the most crucial issues that we face today as a global society. Given that IT assets are fast becoming the life blood that drives modern business, and the current model (grid computing / networking) is expensive and inefficient, alternatives must be sought out. This is of course, where cloud computing comes into the picture.

[caption id="attachment_630" align="aligncenter" width="300"]Cloud Computing Could Become a Powerful Ally of the Green Movement Cloud Computing Could Become a Powerful Ally of the Green Movement[/caption]

Let's envision a fairly large company with extensive IT resources, and a network of several hundred user machines. As you are no doubt already aware, most organizations have this type of setup (either on-site or off-site). You're probably also clued into the fact that it's common for these "user machines" to stay powered on most of the time, even when no work is being performed. Needless to say, when you have hundreds of machines continuously sucking down power without producing anything of value in return, you are wasting energy. This same line of thinking can perhaps also be applied to how the IT department manages energy efficiency for networking. These systems (networking) might also be utilizing power in wholly inefficient ways that some might even say are counterintuitive.

Cloud computing, an energy and networking solution

Arguably, the most groundbreaking facet of cloud computing in general is the fact that it is not merely a new type of IT infrastructure, computing, or networking; it is all three. In the old model, you absolutely must have separate systems for each individual process. For example, one system is used solely for networking, and does nothing else. On the computing side of things, each individual user terminal, or machine, is entirely dependent on its own internal resources for processing power, storage, and the like. Under the current model, an entire IT / business operation is essentially made up of individual components. What makes cloud computing such a groundbreaking concept is that it effectively combines these areas into one infrastructure.

For instance, in a cloud computing scenario, there are no more grossly overpowered individual machines, operating systems, or storage; these items are all requisitioned facets of "the cloud" now. Try to think of it this way; it's like removing all the processing and storage components from the hundreds of machines in your office and transferring them to a centralized cloud. This cloud in turn performs just like the internal components of your self-contained machine.

Why cloud computing is considered to be energy efficient

Simply put, cloud computing could also be called "remote computing". Cloud systems basically use networking to deliver computing resources to its users. As previously stated, this is in essence, merely the combining of resources into one entity. This not only affords us the opportunity to manage energy efficiency more effectively, it also gives users the opportunity to requisition more resources (like processing power) as needed. All individual machines / terminals can be setup to simply turn off when inactive for a length of time. However, the real reason that cloud computing is more efficient than its grid counterpart has to do with the way the energy is used centrally.

If you can imagine all computing resources being resigned to one central location, and then in turn distributed to individual nodes, it's not hard to see how more efficient distribution is achieved; but what about servicing it? This is yet another one of the great facets of cloud computing, its ability increase the effectiveness of IT. Because cloud computing is so highly centralized, there is no need for IT personnel to make constant trips around their company to deal with issues. This is because all the individual "systems" or "machines" are virtualized; now IT workers can basically do their job without having to leave their department.

Green clouds

All of the aforementioned items make cloud computing the ideal candidate for those organizations who are looking to both upgrade their technology, abilities, assets, and perhaps even become aligned with the green movement. The theory and application of cloud technology has been proven to be useful and highly efficient, all that's left if implementation.

The solution for your organization

Having said that, the biggest stumbling block facing the green cloud movement is a lack of knowledge and/or experience in cloud computing itself. That's right; the only thing standing between increased technological potential and significantly reduced energy expenditures is perhaps a lack of qualified personnel. Luckily, this is easily remedied with cloud computing training and certification.

Not only are most e-learning programs for cloud computing certification affordable, they're also one of the easier ways to familiarize an entire IT team with cloud technologies (as quickly as possible). Additionally, these programs are often designed by true experts in the field who really know how to teach the subject matter in order to facilitate true comprehension. A great number of businesses these days are increasingly turning toward various cloud computing foundation programs (which teach the basic fundamentals). If that's not incentive enough to jump on the cloud bandwagon, you should also know that there are deep discounts available for group licenses (group rate discounts).

Mobile Cloud Computing Benefits Development and Usage of Mobile Apps

How Mobile Cloud Computing Benefits Development and Usage of Mobile Apps

By Nate Rodnay

Mobile cloud computing provides many advantages for application developers as well as their end-users. It is a boon for corporate users in particular, that do not have enough capital to invest upfront on required hardware and software.

Mobile applications have made smartphones "smart". The first wave of mobile apps were native apps, however with the increase in Internet capabilities for mobile devices, apps became faster and more powerful, as it was no longer necessary to manage the data storage and processing within the application.

Cloud computing changed mobile application development forever. With benefits like low initial investment, ease of adoption, scalability and elasticity, operational efficiency and large overall cost savings, it didn't take long for mobile app developers to adopt cloud computing.

Cloud computing offers the performance and flexibility that mobile app developers require. Because smartphones and tablets with advanced browsers are capable of accessing stored applications remotely in the cloud, developers can now build apps one time and deploy them across multiple platforms, including iPhones, iPads, Android devices, etc. In short order, more innovative and useful apps were developed more quickly and cost effectively. With this, the smartphone and app markets began to grow at a remarkable rate that shows no signs of slowing.

Advantages to the users

With cloud-based apps, mobile users do not need high-end hardware and infrastructure to run or maintain mobile apps. Businesses are able to pass along the reduced cost of development to their users, while improving the functionality of data sharing, and offering features like collaboration that were not previously feasible. All told, users with any Internet-enabled device can run many more apps and more powerful apps than ever before, at little or no cost.

Advantages to the developers

The advantages of cloud computing for mobile app developers are most pronounced. One, cost savings. Developers need not invest heavily in building infrastructure and resources. Cloud computing provides instant access to scalable mobile application tools for building mobile and tablet apps. Two, cross-platform app development. Developers can now build an app once and deploy across multiple platforms. And of course, building once and deploying to many devices dramatically reduces the cost of developing apps. Three, deploying apps to app stores and web sites is much easier. For example, developers can avoid device manufacturers or carrier app stores to distribute their apps, and publish them on their own private channels.

The future of mobile apps in the cloud

Despite the many advantages, cloud-based mobile apps will remain hampered by the limitation of wireless bandwidth capacity and intermittent network availability. We expect this will be a short-term problem as new developments in wireless technology are announced every day. In the meantime, alternate techniques like usage of HTML5, which does local caching, enable offline use of apps.

[caption id="attachment_625" align="aligncenter" width="292"]Mobile Cloud Computing Benefits Development and Usage of Mobile Apps Mobile Cloud Computing Benefits Development and Usage of Mobile Apps[/caption]

Overall, mobile cloud computing is strong and growing fast. When the limitations on connectivity are resolved, it will become the major player in development and usage of mobile apps.

Managed Services and Cloud Computing

Why Growing Companies Need Managed Services and Cloud Computing

By Chris Slocumb

There aren't many organizations, regardless of their size or the industry they're in, that can't benefit from using smarter outsourced IT in the form of managed services agreements and cloud computing. For growing businesses, however, they are especially important. Why? Because even more than cost savings and productivity gains, they give something even more valuable: flexibility.

[caption id="attachment_620" align="aligncenter" width="300"]Managed Services and Cloud Computing Managed Services and Cloud Computing[/caption]

Using cloud computing and outsourced IT partner, your company's technology becomes scalable. That means that no matter how fast your sales grow - or even if you need to scale operations back for a while - you can do so without incurring big costs, while still being able to take advantage of new opportunities as they arise.

Consider any of these four situations:

1. Your sales grow quickly and you need new IT investments. With traditional technology arrangements, too much business can actually turn into a big problem. Here's why: Investing tens of thousands of dollars in new servers, software licenses, and communications upgrades is a bigger risk when you don't know the long-term viability of the new accounts. With managed services and cloud computing, however, you have the flexibility to ramp up operations for as long as you need, without breaking the bank.

2. You need to save on IT expenses. Of course, things go the other way sometimes, too. It could be that a competitive landscape, lost customers, or investments in other parts of the company are forcing you to cut back on technology. With a scalable managed services and cloud computing platform, you can make this decision easily - and without the costs associated with letting full-time employees go.

3. Your company has a sudden need for new technology. It isn't just that your business can get bigger or smaller with managed services and cloud computing, either. Sometimes, what's needed is something completely different. Particularly with cloud computing, you can explore new applications, software ideas, and collaborative platforms for a low monthly fee, rather than having to invest big money in them while you're unsure whether they'll be a great fit or not.

4. You aren't sure what the future will bring. This is probably the most common situation where managed services and cloud computing come into play, and the most important. Because few of us can accurately predict what the challenges will be in the next 12 to 24 months, having the option to switch up the size, configuration, or capabilities of your technology setup can be a huge advantage. Change is the only constant in today's world, and you need to be prepared for whatever is around the corner.

Cloud Computing Advisory Service Offered to SMEs

Cloud Computing Advisory Service Offered to SMEs

By Andy Tierney

IT company offer Cloud Computing Advisory service to SME's

Throughout this article we will give advice to SME's on advantages and disadvantages of Cloud Computing.

To find out why SME's should embrace this service to their business, take a look at the information provided below.

Does Cloud Computing apply to SME businesses?

Is there a need for SME's to embrace it?

There are certain answers out there, but it's up to each company to decide for themselves. Of course experts agree that Cloud Computing is the future, not only for SME's, but for other companies, too.

[caption id="attachment_615" align="aligncenter" width="264"]Cloud Computing Advisory Service Offered to SMEs Cloud Computing Advisory Service Offered to SMEs[/caption]

Most SME's still see this improved services as something new and strange, not as an opportunity to progress.

There are certain security issues that we cannot avoid when it comes to this service. Those issues are:

  1. Privacy Issues

  2. Legal Issues

  3. Availability Issues

  4. Loss of control over data Issues

IT engineers and experts are working hard to solve those problems and to improve the security. These were the main issue's why SME's and other companies avoided Cloud Computing.

How would I deploy it?

There are different ways to deploy this service into your business. It all depends on your business requirements. Four main cloud computing deployment models are:

  1. Private

  2. Public

  3. Community

  4. Hybrid

Private- is the infrastructure deployed for specific organization. Deployment of private cloud is mainly in-house operation. A third party can be included into the private cloud if they are on the premises.

Public- is a commercial basis operation available to the public. This infrastructure enables consumer to develop and deploy different services in the cloud. Public clouds are serviced and managed by a cloud service provider.

Community- is the shared cloud computing infrastructure among a number of organizations with similar interests. To keep the price of this cloud service low, users (companies involved) share that between themselves.

Hybrid- is the mix of private and public clouds. This cloud infrastructure has the ability to move data from one type of cloud to another, through different applications.

How much would it cost?

One of the first reasons why SME's should embrace this improved IT service would be price.

Usually the cost of cloud IT service is cheaper than traditional computing.

By introducing cloud IT service to your business venture, you can save money in your existing IT department.

Advisory service on Cloud Computing shouldn't cost a lot, and the best way for the customer is to contact providers customer service department for more information.

Cloud Computing And The Small Ecommerce Business

Cloud Computing And The Small Ecommerce Business

Author: Dominic Monkhouse

To respond to this increasing demand, smaller ecommerce businesses need to adopt a robust system that can cope with peaks and troughs without costing the earth. The solution? Cloud computing.

Cloud computing seems to be the technological topic de jour, but can it really bring all of the benefits that industry commentators expound? Especially to smaller merchants? Will those who fail to embrace cloud computing really suffer the consequences?

[caption id="attachment_610" align="aligncenter" width="300"]Cloud Computing And The Small Ecommerce Business Cloud Computing And The Small Ecommerce Business[/caption]

Certainly they might miss out on some great cost savings. One of the main attractions of cloud computing is that clients are only charged for the services that they use, akin to 'pay-as-you-go' schemes. Therefore it should immediately save money. Additionally, because the client uses the cloud provider's resources, they won't need to spend money on equipment, maintenance, new software updates nor related manpower. After all, how many small ecommerce businesses have had to buy more equipment to cope with heavy demand at peak times? How much of that equipment lays unused for ten months of the year? Plenty, no doubt. With cloud computing, however, money won't be wasted on redundant items. It is easy to scale up resources to cope with busy periods, i.e. the holidays, using extra servers to ensure all transactions are completed. Then, when demand reaches usual levels, the extra resources can be 'turned off'.

Another benefit of cloud hosting is that there's no need to invest in fancy PC equipment to use cloud computing, all data can be accessed through the usual well-known browsers - Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. - which is great news for those with smaller operations. With separate cloud hosting, access to particular applications can be given and easily made for other stakeholders - such as suppliers - who could facilitate their invoicing on the internet; no longer needing to send paper invoices. The whole process can be completed far more quickly and far more accurately.

Not only that, but using the cloud can contribute towards a firm's business continuity measures. Recent high winds and extreme weather have demonstrated the effects of nature on companies, shutting down offices, causing power cuts - potentially interrupting business. That's all very bad news for the ecommerce industry, which could lose thousands/millions of pounds in lost business. That's why keeping the online operation hosted via cloud makes such good sense: networks won't be affected and business can continue as normal.

It's good for consumers too, whose shopping experience will be smoother and not disturbed by power outages, etc. Plus they will be able to choose between many more online retailers, as due to economies of scale, cloud computing is affordable by all sizes of businesses. Therefore, it allows smaller ecommerce merchants to compete alongside their bigger counterparts. It is a concept which can be used by all and could well make a dent in any marketplace domination held by large, rival organisations.

It's been said that 90 per cent of all ecommerce businesses will make use of the cloud by 2017. Given that cloud computing is a flexible, affordable technology which can help smaller ecommerce businesses evolve, compete and succeed, it's little wonder.

Point to Notice When Choosing Your Cloud Computing Partner?

Point to Notice When Choosing Your Cloud Computing Partner?

Author: Swet Nath

Cloud Computing is becoming progressively prevalent even in the olive-sized business world that is the small businesses. Underneath is a guide to choose the right vendor for this job.

The commitment of cloud computing is that it can be like a shaft of light for a business that wishes to amplify information technology capacity or capabilities speedily without being bogged down by the disbursal of buying new-fangled infrastructure, licensing software, and training staff. These days, businesses can find a heap of savings at the end of the rainbow by shelling out for these IT services - that comprises of infrastructure, software, security, and even collaboration platforms - that is on a subscription or a pay-per-usage basis. When it comes to picking a cloud computing vendor, although, there are multiplicity of options. And determining the apposite one can be as tricky as forecasting the weather.

[caption id="attachment_606" align="aligncenter" width="262"]Point to Notice When Choosing Your Cloud Computing Partner? Point to Notice When Choosing Your Cloud Computing Partner?[/caption]

This implies small and mid-sized organizations need to do some homework before getting into a cloud computing agreement with a vendor. There are various primal factors you need to reckon before you start looking. There's a comprehensive landscape of services out there, and you want to essentially stay true to how you run IT today in terms of availability, safety, performance, and overall business suitableness.

The first question you require to respond is whether a cloud computing solution is right for your business or not. For various small and mid-sized businesses, or even start-ups, managing computer systems and networks can put off from running other, more central aspects of running a business. Between the computers that clang, software that has to be upgraded, and morphing security risks from Internet connectivity, it's a full-time job. If you don't have an IT department or you don't have the resources to germinate that department, it will definitely make more sense to outsource some of your IT needs. That's one ground why the idea of cloud computing is so catchy to a large number of companies.

There are other business concerns that advantage with cloud computing, as well. Cloud computing providers can often proffer businesses with reduced prices for entree to more urbane technology because you share those IT resources with other companies, thereby reducing the overhead costs to the vendor of licensing software or buying servers. In addition, the pay-as-you-go quality of some cloud computing contracts permit businesses to pay for only what they utilized, for example, if only six staff members need accession to the financial software, they can pay for only those six people instead of purchasing a license for 80 users. Many contracts can also permit businesses to roll up rapidly to help alleviate speedy growth.

In order to accomplish these merits, business leaders require to realize what types of cloud proffering would be germane, what the company's requirements are, and which vendors tender the best fit.

Some of the chief questions to inquire when looking for a vendor must comprise of the following:-

  • How does the cloud service provider determine performance?

  • What metrics do they employ?

  • How does their definition of performance associate to end user contentment?

The perfect vendor will proffer the best cloud computing solution by utilizing a germane cloud computing technology. Cloud computing SaaS is also tendered by cloud computing service providers. With cloud computing services in rage the business cloud computing has propelled immensely.

The continuous wave of development in the information technology is paving new pathways for communication and collaboration on a wider platform. Cloud computing is a path breaking phenomena where the computing and storage capacity are provided as a services to the users around the world. The services requires nothing more than a browser in order to access the applications whereas the data and the software are stored somewhere on remotely located servers. Though the phenomenon of cloud computing has its own challenges. There are various service providers that are into the business of offering Cloud Computing and being a major brand, HP stands in the first row.

The Possible Issues In Cloud Computing

For an advanced technology like cloud computing that has changed how we connect to each other and share information, the issues are equally challenging. As it shares common platforms including other network-based applications, communication and storage hence there are certain vulnerabilities that are expected and they are as follows:

  • Web application risk that is sql injection and cross-site scripting.

  • Accessibility risks, here the services may be denied to the authenticated user as a result of an intrusion.

  • ARP poisoning (spoofing), IP spoofing, RIP attacks, and DNS poisoning are amongst the common issues on the internet.

  • Tampering, data verification, loss and theft, on a local machine, during transit, during remote back-ups and at the unknown third-party device.

  • Physical access issues in which the staff of an organization fails to have physical access to data or processing it and unknown third party having the physical access to the system.

  • Privacy and control issues that arise when a third party succeeds in having control of data

Cloud Computing And SaaS Web Apps Deployment

Cloud Computing And SaaS Web Apps Deployment

Author: Elan Techno

SaaS (Software as a Service) had almost met its doom in 2001 but it crawled back into contention due to the need of companies to combat with high-cost IT infrastructure. SaaS was revolutionary when it came in, but the expectations were too huge to be fulfilled. SaaS has now managed to smother other new technologies and has several versions in the form of Infrastructure as a service and Platform as a service. SaaS has considerably regained its stature since the dot com bubble burst and has grown in recent years.

[caption id="attachment_583" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Cloud Computing And SaaS Web Apps Deployment"]Cloud Computing And SaaS Web Apps Deployment[/caption]

SaaS web apps started out as point solutions and the first players in the market included UpShot and SalesNet. These solutions provided services related to specific business needs but did not have a huge customer following even though the idea was new and useful. The features were limited and the resources were limited too at their disposal. The competitors who started out offering SaaS solutions offered better features after the dot com bubble while the originators lost their place of importance and eventually vanished into thin air.

Feasibility of cloud computing and SaaS

The feasibility of cloud computing services has always been undetermined since it is difficult to quantify the benefits as well as its utility in any business context. Business requirements have always mentioned the need for low cost but efficient infrastructure but with no solid and structured cloud computing solution in place, it was difficult for businesses to opt for cloud computing. SaaS proved to be an efficient mode of delivery but it is important to know that the IT setup has evolved well over the years and the security measures are better than they were, years before.

Nowadays, there are businesses that are not wary of offshore software testing because of the fantastic setup of offshore service providers. Most are willing to outsource their non-core IT tasks to offshore locations. The cloud has made it possible to save time and money and set up virtual offices to get their tasks done.

Importance of Cloud computing and SaaS web apps

Cloud computing solutions are great for small businesses since they are scalable according to the needs. Additionally, they can even handle the immense workload at cheap monthly prices.

SaaS has grown to several heights and now has become mission-critical too. It has transitioned well from being a unit silo process to a full-fledged enterprise mode of delivery and the SaaS web apps are used for mission-critical purposes related to ERP solutions.

Cloud computing services consumed from external service providers have taken a huge chunk of the total services offered, according to a Gartner report. The cloud market is preferred today by many with the advent of Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure capitalizing on the surge of interest in people for cloud computing. Many organizations have expressed their desired to get into cloud computing by allocating a part of their IT budget for the same. Many of them plan to allocate budget for cloud computing in the near future.

Competing With Cloud Computing Providers

Competing With Cloud Computing Providers

Author: Jesse Zagorsky

Cloud computing promises to deliver cost saving through the "pay as you use" paradigm. The focus is on adding computing resources when needed and releasing them when the need is serviced. In this paper, we review the current cloud computing scenario and discuss the challenges of competing with cloud computing providers.

Cloud computing and IT in Future

Any Software Developer in India who advocates cloud computing is inexperienced or are incapable of understanding the real details of IT. That's why it is commonly said that "Public cloud computing is fine for the SMB and startup market, but enterprises aren't ready to move to that model." The following points make it clear what cloud computing means for the future of IT.

Rationing role of IT

IT has traditionally been given a fixed budget and decides which of the many business unit demands it will satisfy with that budget. Due to its rationing role, IT seeks to reduce demand for IT resources. Rationing also means that business units are dissatisfied with IT service levels and have a strong motivation to find other ways to satisfy their IT requirements. In the past, it was extremely difficult to find those other ways, but with the rise of public cloud service providers, there is now a convenient way to bypass IT.

IT as a service provider

IT must act as a service provider rather than acting as a project manager. It needs to welcome business unit demand and view itself as a service provider, ready to deliver resources to any and all that desire computing power. It's because now IT is no longer a monopoly supplier.

Implement chargeback

India Software Developers must have signals to evaluate the use of services versus the benefits derived by deploying those services. Cost is the signaling mechanism used in businesses, so IT has to be prepared to offer chargeback.

Jon put it this way: "Business leadership needs to be held accountable for IT service consumption." In some very mature organizations, this may be achievable with "show-back" of costs to the consuming business units, but in most enterprises, "charge-back" will be a necessity."

IT needs to transform its culture

Instead of being a technology-focused monopoly provider, IT must be a market-serving, demand-generating, business enabler based on delivering IT service capabilities.

Challenges faced by the IT organization

Need of a new funding model

  • CFOs will need a new funding model which places the financial responsibility for consumption on the shoulders of the business consumers.

  • Requires building capability prior to demand arrival and CFOs must be ready to fund capacity to enable service provisioning.

  • IT can sell services to business units after the capacity is in place.

Internal IT delivering cheaper cloud computing

  • Internal IT can deliver cloud computing at a lower price point than a public provider.

  • IT shops can introduce multi-tenant, automated, highly secure, tiered, self-provisioned capabilities that can deliver lower unit costs and better SLAs than what's available in the Public Cloud for IaaS [infrastructure as a service] and PaaS [platform as a service].

  • How internal IT groups can achieve lower costs than public providers is a question.

The main battle between the private versus public clouds is on the non-cost requirements that certain applications have, and where the best place to address those requirements is. IT will be far better to outline services in which it can offer undeniable advantage, like certainty of compliance, privacy or business domain knowledge.
